Brexit Blue Economy Enterprise Development Scheme Investment

In 2023 Galway Outdoor Education Centre T/A Achill Surf and Adventure Centre with the financial aid of Bord Iascaigh Mara (BIM) through the Brexit Blue Economy Enterprise Development Scheme invested in the upgrade and development of an Outdoor Student recreation, gym & exercise area at out residential adventure centre in Keel, Achill Island Co Mayo F28ER88, with the joint vision of improving costal tourism, marine leisure and sport.

Background

The Achill surf centre is an established business which offers seaside holidays and tours to both Irish and international customers on a seasonal basis from March to November each year.

The business offers a range of water sports and tours including surfing, kayaking, sea kayaking, coasteering, coastal geology and environmental studies along with a range of land based activities.

The business also offers residential accommodation on the island for youth groups, school students, families and the general public.

The project proposed to improve the existing outdoor area of the existing premises by offering clients an easily accessed outdoor recreation space, outdoor gym and exercise area to complement the current range of activities. Improve the existing facility and contribute to a better overall environment.

Scope Of the Project

To supply and lay:
• 130m of edge kerbing
• 25m concrete channels
• No. 5 Gully grates
• 32 metres of IN-SITU concrete mix
• Supply and erect 130m of concrete post and timber rail fencing
• Ground preparation of 1204 Sq/M:
• Supply & lay 50mm deep clause 804 and compact
• Supply & lay 60mm deep of tarmacadam AC10 SMA to clause 3.1.9
• Fixed Outdoor Gym Equipment
• Supply and fit x 1 Dip station
• Supply and fit x 1 Chin-up Bar
• Supply and fit x 1 Ab bench
• Supply and fit x 1 Push up Bars
• Supply and fit x 1 Parallel wall Bars
• Supply and fit x 1 Weights bench

The aims off the project

• The business aims to improve knowledge of the coastal environment through outdoor based activities and learning.
• Allowing for sustainable development of local resources and businesses
The project will promote tourism in the area, improve general well being and promote healthy lifestyle and an appreciation on the surrounding costal environment.
• The project will add another outdoor recreation element to the existing offering in the area, provide additional job opportunities in the form of seasonal jobs and encourage a wider variety of people to visit the area.
• The project will highlight the natural beauty of the area and the importance to maintain such areas in respect of climate change and the impacts that it has on such costal areas.

Project results

• The project was a success and the quality of work and infrastructure improvement was to a very high standard.
• The investment will allow for sustainable development of local resources and businesses
The project will promote tourism in the area, improve general well being and promote healthy lifestyle and an appreciation on the surrounding costal environment. For all clients at the centre plus the general public at large.
• The project has added another outdoor recreation element to the existing offering in the area, provided additional job opportunities in the construction and operation of the facility in the form of seasonal jobs and encourage a wider variety of people to visit the area.
• The project allows users a better costal and marine experience, it also highlights the natural beauty of the area and the importance to maintain such areas in respect of climate change and the impacts that it has on such coastal areas.
